What Is Garden Fencing, and Is It Right for Your Property?

A new fence defines your boundary, improves privacy, and adds a finished look to the overall garden. Whether you need to replace old or damaged panels, install fencing around a new build, or create a structured division within your garden, Classic Landscaping installs fencing to a standard that holds up to the British weather. We work with a range of timber styles and can advise on the right option for your property, soil type, and local conditions across Dorset.

We Work With

Closeboard Fencing

The most common and practical garden fence type. Closeboard panels are strong, durable, and provide a good level of privacy. Posts are set in concrete and boards fixed to arris rails for a solid, long-lasting result.

Featheredge Panels

Individual featheredge boards fixed to a frame offer a clean, traditional look with good strength. Suitable for boundary fences where both sides need to present well.

Trellis

Often used to top fencing panels or as a standalone structure for climbing plants. Trellis adds height and a decorative element without making a boundary feel oppressive.

Post and Rail

A simple, open fence style well suited to rural and semi-rural properties across Dorset. Available in two or three rail configurations and often combined with stock wire for additional security.

How We Work

Our Fencing Installation Process

1

Free Consultation

We visit your property, walk the boundary or area to be fenced, and discuss the style, height, and any specific requirements. No obligation, no pressure.

2

Design and Quote

We confirm the post positions, panel or board style, and any groundwork requirements, then provide a clear written quote.

3

Installation

Posts are set in concrete at the correct centres for the panel or board type being used — typically every 1.8m for standard closeboard. We check for underground services before digging and set posts to a consistent line and height throughout. Panels or boards are fixed level, with any gates hung and adjusted on site to swing and latch correctly.

4

Sign-Off

We walk the completed fence line with you before leaving site. Any adjustments are made before the job is signed off.

“We don’t consider a job complete until you’re 100% satisfied.”

Overseen by Ian and Scott

Ian and Scott oversee all projects personally. You deal with the owners, not a sales representative.

Unbeatable Attention to Detail

A fence is only as strong as its posts. We set every post in concrete to the correct depth — the single biggest factor in how long a fence stands before it starts to lean.

Testimonials

What our customers say.

4.9 / 5 average · 184 reviews

Ian and his team were excellent. All products used were of a very high quality. Even with quite scant detail Ian fully understood what I was looking for. They were very polite and friendly and extremely tidy and professional. I would highly recommend them to anyone. He also repaired our rotting fence panel and once again did an excellent job. We are really happy customers.

We’ve had a couple of jobs done by Classic Landscaping and have been extremely pleased with the results. A further job to follow. Ian, Scott and Cade are a great team, very hardworking, friendly and polite with experienced knowledge to suggest ideas to help with decision making. Always leave the site clean and tidy. To be thoroughly recommended.

The team and Classic were helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The team of 3 were with us for a number of weeks creating resin paths and putting new stone work around our flower beds. My wife and I were very pleased with the teams work and the finish they created. All hard workers. We would recommend them and certainly intend to use Classic again

Amazing work and thoroughly professional and efficient. The team were great to have around and liaised with me throughout. I am delighted with their work and will be using them again. I have received many compliments on their work from neighbours and passers by who taken their details they were so impressed.

Ian and his men arrived and worked like trojans until the work was completed. From the quote process to completion I can’t fault Ian and his team. They were hard working, tidy and kept us in the loop the whole time. I’m so pleased with the results, I now have a garden that can be used all year round. It’s no longer am useable space.

I have used Classic Landscaping on several occasions for patio and wall brickwork and fence work. The communication, quality of work , reliability and friendliness has always been of a very high standard. I have already recommended Classic Landscaping to neighbours and they are equally satisfied with the excellent workmanship and service.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Fencing costs depend on the length of the run, the style chosen, and the ground conditions — rocky or sloped ground can add to the cost of post installation. We provide a full written quote after measuring up on site.

A typical garden fence replacement takes one to two days. Longer runs or more complex projects may take slightly longer. We confirm the expected duration when we quote.

In most cases, no. Fences up to 2m high on a boundary do not require planning permission. Fences adjacent to a highway are limited to 1m without permission. If your property is listed or in a conservation area, different rules may apply.

Boundary responsibility is determined by the title deeds of your property, usually indicated by a ‘T’ mark on the plan. We can advise on what to look for, but the deeds are the definitive reference.

A properly installed pressure-treated timber fence will typically last 15 to 25 years. The posts tend to be the first component to fail — setting them correctly in concrete from the outset is the most effective way to extend the life of the fence.
