What Is Garden Design, and Is It Right for Your Outdoor Space?
Garden design is the process of planning an outdoor space from the ground up, combining hard landscaping, planting, levels, and materials into a coherent whole that works for how you actually use your garden. As garden designers and landscapers in Poole and Bournemouth, Classic Landscaping offers a complete design and build service across both towns and the wider Dorset area, taking projects from initial ideas through to finished installation. Ian and Scott bring over 30 years of combined experience to every design.

Garden Materials We Work With
Porcelain Paving
Porcelain is the surface we use most for patios, paths and steps within a garden design. Frost-proof, non-porous and virtually maintenance-free, it holds its colour and cleans back to new with a simple wash. Large-format porcelain gives a sharp, contemporary finish that suits modern gardens across Poole and Bournemouth, and can run flush from the house into the garden for a seamless indoor to outdoor transition.
Natural Stone
Natural stone brings warmth and character that works especially well in traditional and country-style gardens. Sandstone, limestone and granite each weather gently over the years, and because every piece is unique, a natural stone patio or path has a quality that improves with age. It sits naturally alongside brick, planting and stone-faced walls.
Artificial Grass and Planting
A garden design balances hard landscaping with greenery. We install low-maintenance artificial grass for lawns that stay green all year, and design planting schemes chosen to suit your soil, aspect and the coastal Dorset climate. Planting is structured for year-round interest rather than a single summer flush, softening the hard landscaping and bringing the whole design to life.
Walls, Steps and Structures
Level changes, boundaries and features are built from brick, render and stone. We construct retaining walls, raised beds, steps and stone-clad planters to shape the garden and make sloped plots usable, along with timber structures such as pergolas to define and shelter seating areas. These elements give a garden its structure and turn a flat design into a three-dimensional space.

Our Garden Design Process
Free Consultation
We visit your garden, discuss your brief, and start to understand what the space needs to do. There is no charge for this initial visit and no obligation to proceed.
Design and Quote
We develop a full garden design based on your brief and produce a 3D render so you can see the proposed layout before committing. The accompanying quote is fully itemised by trade so you understand where the budget is going.
Build
We manage the entire installation in-house. Groundworks, hard landscaping, planting, structures, and finishing details are all coordinated by Ian and Scott. Sub-contractors are not used — every trade on your project is our own team.
Sign-Off
Ian or Scott walks the completed garden with you to make sure every element meets the brief. Any final adjustments are made before we consider the project complete.
What a Garden Design and Build Involves?
A full garden design and build brings every trade under one team. As landscapers in Poole and Bournemouth, we handle the groundworks, hard landscaping, structures, planting and finishing in-house, coordinated by Ian and Scott rather than handed to separate contractors. That single point of accountability is what keeps a large project on track and ensures the finished garden matches the design that was agreed.
How Long Does a Garden Design Take?
A straightforward design and build across Poole and Bournemouth typically takes two to four weeks from the start of installation, depending on scope. The design stage itself runs alongside, allowing time to refine the concept and produce the 3D visuals before any work begins. Larger or more complex gardens take longer, and we confirm the full timeline in your proposal.
How We Quote, and What Affects the Cost?
A garden design and build quote reflects the size of the garden, the complexity of the design, the materials chosen and the amount of groundwork and structural work involved. We provide a fully itemised proposal after the initial design consultation, broken down by element, so you have a clear picture before committing. The consultation is free and there is no obligation to proceed.

Unbeatable Attention to Detail
Good garden design is in the detail — the fall on a path, the reveal on a step, the spacing in a planting scheme. These are the things that separate a garden that looks designed from one that just looks built.

What our customers say.
Ian and his team were excellent. All products used were of a very high quality. Even with quite scant detail Ian fully understood what I was looking for. They were very polite and friendly and extremely tidy and professional. I would highly recommend them to anyone. He also repaired our rotting fence panel and once again did an excellent job. We are really happy customers.

We’ve had a couple of jobs done by Classic Landscaping and have been extremely pleased with the results. A further job to follow. Ian, Scott and Cade are a great team, very hardworking, friendly and polite with experienced knowledge to suggest ideas to help with decision making. Always leave the site clean and tidy. To be thoroughly recommended.

The team and Classic were helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. The team of 3 were with us for a number of weeks creating resin paths and putting new stone work around our flower beds. My wife and I were very pleased with the teams work and the finish they created. All hard workers. We would recommend them and certainly intend to use Classic again

Amazing work and thoroughly professional and efficient. The team were great to have around and liaised with me throughout. I am delighted with their work and will be using them again. I have received many compliments on their work from neighbours and passers by who taken their details they were so impressed.

Ian and his men arrived and worked like trojans until the work was completed. From the quote process to completion I can’t fault Ian and his team. They were hard working, tidy and kept us in the loop the whole time. I’m so pleased with the results, I now have a garden that can be used all year round. It’s no longer am useable space.
BH11
I have used Classic Landscaping on several occasions for patio and wall brickwork and fence work. The communication, quality of work , reliability and friendliness has always been of a very high standard. I have already recommended Classic Landscaping to neighbours and they are equally satisfied with the excellent workmanship and service.

Frequently Asked Questions
The cost of a garden design and build project varies considerably depending on the size of the garden, the complexity of the design, and the materials and landscaping elements included. We provide a fully itemised quote after the initial design consultation, so you have a clear picture of the total investment before committing.

Yes. Classic Landscaping is a full design and build service. We do not hand the project to a separate contractor once the design is agreed — our own team carries out every element of the installation.
We design across a wide range of styles, from contemporary minimalist gardens to traditional cottage-style planting schemes. The design is always led by your brief, your property, and how you want to use the space.
Most garden landscaping work does not require planning permission. However, structures such as large garden buildings, walls over 1m adjacent to a highway, or significant changes to ground level in certain areas may need consent. We advise on this as part of the design process.
